By and large I agree; but we live in interesting times as per the curse. If you include servers then MS market share is more like 70+% with Linux having about 18%, Unix a bit over 10% and Apple having the rest. That leaves out embedded computers like those that make your camera, car, refrigerator, …operate—or not.
Apple is trying to head off anti trust action by alleging that the iPhone/iPad etc. are computers and should be evaluated for antitrust in the light of the overall computer market. Unfortunately they have turned out to be a worse technology thug than MS even at the top of MS's form.
Right now the big deal on the table is HTML5. It is being finalized and has had many adverse comments on the video spec or lack there of. Fortunately or not neither Flash nor Silverlight on on the table as being required and may not be permitted. Initially it looked like Flash, MPEG2/4 and Ogg Theora were the required formats. Luckily MPEG-LA stuck their oar in and at this point it looks like the only required CODEC will be the open source no royalty VC7 from Google; Flash may survive but QT, vc1/silverlight are definitely out of the running as it looks right now are MPEG2/4. MPEG may survive as an optional but not required format.
With everyone but Apple behind VC7 (MS is halfhearted and says that if there is a player on the system [like QT today] they will use it) looks like VC7 will be a winner and so will everyone but Apple, MS and MPEG-LA..
