Default To repair or not to repair? DVX-100A

I have a DVX-100A with what I assume is a broken rack focus. Without inspection, I have received a quote of $300-$400 to fix it. To get a true estimate, it will cost me $90.

I am ready to go HD and I am wanting to sell this camera anyway. But my question is, should i have it repaired and sell it or sell as is? has about 200 hours of use on it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Considering that a used good condition DVX100b goes for $1300 and an essentially new unit with a lot of extras about $1800 or a new unit with 60 day warranty $2100 on eBay. I would not pay more than $400 for an as is unit.

If you can trust the repair place I'd repair it and keep it as a backup/2nd camera. Its one of the very best SD cameras out there.

If you really need the money that's different but IMHO its worth $1200 as a backup. If you are just shooting family stuff for fun that's different and I would be inclined to sell or see if could donate it and get an extra tax write off.

Hey Jerry, Thanks for the comment.

I really do need the money, but having a back-up cam is very tempting. Especially since I have my eyeballs on the Canon 7D, I am a tad worried that I will be in need of a good DV cam for a secondary at some point.

Decisions, decisions...

If you are serious about a HDSLR check out Rodregez 7D. Yes the monster he is hidden behind is a fully pimped out 7D. At a minimum you need something like the Zacto Z finder as the HDSLRS can't spell focus assist! You also will wind up with several thousand dollars in lenses. But I am all in favor of supporting economic recovery. Definately keep the DVX100 as you are going to find out that HDSLRs aren't particularly easy to use nor particularly useful in many cases.

wowza. That is a total Frankenstein cam!

I have been interested in purchasing a DSLR for a while now just for photography (rebel or similar), but the thought of shooting 1080 really got me thinking about going for the 7D or Lumix. For the most part, I shoot for a web based movie review website, Which is a normally gorilla style interview format with my DVX. For my current "real job" I shoot mainly testimonial interviews and b-roll. I think a DSLR just might be the ticket for that use.

Thanks again for your help, i really appreciate the input.

I have a Casio F1 I got because of the 300FPS capability but I have used it for several talking heads shots and locked off focus isn't a problem and it works very well. If you need to focus on the fly or even quickly you need a gadget like the Zacto and you will have to go with 2 part audio as the HDSLR cameras don't do audio.
