Default Need some HD Help

Hi everyone! I am shooting a music video tomorrow with a Sony HVR V1U. I need a little reassurance on the HD. I have been doing tests shooting in 1080i 24p on the Sony and finishing it on Final Cut Express. Are there any concerns with these settings? I like the look of 24p, and I know it's really 29.97 in FCE, so I think I am good to go. Should I not shoot progressive scan?

I want the best looking image, the video will be outputted to DVD but will be used on the web as well.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

IMHO the best results are from shooting 30p for DVD and the Web. But the big issue s usually sound. How do you plan on doing that? If the band mimes to a CD you are all set.

Why 30p over 24p? Just curious! As for sound, we are doing playback digitally through a PA system, so that should sync up fine in post. No time code so it will have to be done by hand, oh joy!

Why 24p, and not 24pa? Sony Vegas treats 24pa as true 24fps progressive, no need to deal with pulldown. I don't know about FCE.

I have found that in both Vegas (old experience) & CS4 as well as other programs that 30p seems to compress better and look more natural than 24p—IMHO pretty herky jerky). Over all compresors seem to do better with 30p and have better quality (fewer artifacts). I really don't know why, but that's the way it is.

BTW there is no digital playback via PA and unless you are getting a feed directly from the preamp or the mixer you will not have viable audio.

the only time that you should be shooting 24fps is when you are sure that it's going to end up on film.

consider that no tv system broadcasts 24fps, and most big screen tvs don't play it back properly to begin with... you typically have to pay extra to get real 24p playback capability.

youtube is a 30p world, not 24p.

Actually, in the last 3-4 years the TVs got markedly better. DVD players got significantly better more than 5-7 years ago. So, no problems with 24p.

YouTube handles 24p just fine.

Looks to me like they convert it to 30p using interpolation.

this isn't about tv's getting "better", it's about tv's not displaying 24fps in the correct manner.

then you should have no problem showing us the youtube page where it specifies 24fps capability?
